6 Healthier Options

Besides the fact that I actually feel like a mom ("Grab your coat" "Use both hands" "You have to eat your lunch" "No, you don't have a fever" "Make sure the words you're using are kind") and I'm really not, this will probably be the most mom post a non-mom will write.

Let's talk healthy snacks and meals on the go.
I've always been a pretty healthy eater but that's mostly because when I turned about 14 anything I ate stuck to me. Metabolism blows but my mom who's pretty good about turning lemons into lemonade has said, "Well Dani Girl, think about it this way, when your peers are 40 and gaining weight because they've formed bad habits, you'll still be trim because you always eat well." Payoff in 20 years? But wait, I'd rather just eat 4 cookies, not gain a pound and call it good.

Anyways, I'm super weird and track everything on the My Fitness Pal app on my phone. If you haven't done it, it's amazing. I eat around 1250 calories a day (depending on how much I work out that day), which is relatively low, considering that is almost the exact amount of calories that would keep my brother-in-law alive if he were in a coma, but we can't all have the metabolism of a hummingbird.

I cannot tell you, at this point in my life, that I'm 100% vegan, because if I did, that would be a real lie. However, I very rarely eat meat or any kind of dairy. I do eat a ton ton ton of veggies, some fruit, some whole grains, other proteins and an occassional treat. I stay away from high fructose corn syrup.
These are the things that are in my fridge and pantry. I keep it quick and easy.
(1) 100 Cals per bag. I love popcorn more than you (2) Such a big fruit eater. I probably go through 6 of those big apple slice bags a month and they're only $4 at Walmart (3) Healthy Choice Greek Frozen Yogurt in Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry and Vanilla. OBSESSED. 100 calories per cup (4) Edamame with a little sea salt (5) Green smoothies- my current fave is blueberry peach (6) My lunches everyday. Vegetable steamers about 160 calories per bag (I just buy the veggie ones, no rice or noodles) and Healthy Choice lunches. Yummy. (7) Black bean and spinach quesidillas on whole wheat tortilla. I could eat like 10 but I'm pretty good at restraining (8) Veggie straws. Not as nutritious as they sound but they're only 110 calories for the little bags (9) Sugar snap peas and 1 or 2 tablespoons of dip

A few other things I've found that are really helpful are to put snacks in their portion size in a bag when I get home from the grocery store. It sounds petty, but I'll count out 53 pretzel sticks (1 serving size) and stick them in bags that way it's easy to grab on my way out the door and I can keep good track of how much I'm eating.

I am absolutely not a dietition and I don't claim to be, so who knows, I could be doing this all wrong :) I'd love to hear of yummy things you do to get more ideas for myself. Beg, borrow and steal people!

  2. I LOVED this very informative rundown! When I'm minding my p's and q's it looks a lot like mine but I'm wondering about your blueberry peach smoothies...do you use fresh peaches? They are rarely in season. My green smoothies are always spinach, banana and strawberry and changing it up sounds fun! Also, do you make your own spinach wraps? Or buy them? JC! Love you!!!

  3. Frozen peaches and frozen blueberries! Spinach wraps I make! They're so good. Just some spinach and black beans. Sometimes I'll put a little corn and/or cheese on them.
